A Buyer’s Guide

There are a number of aspects of any treadmill that you should consider before you purchase one. After all, a good treadmill and a bad one just might be the difference between accomplishing your fitness goal, and losing all motivation before you see any real progress. Especially because exercise equipment is notoriously expensive, you likely are not going to want to settle on any model without doing a little bit of research first. Most consumers in search of the right treadmill for them wonder things like, “How do I know if I’m paying a decent price for the quality I’m getting?” and “How will I know if my treadmill is going to be suited for my unique workout routine?” You could be asking yourself if you’ll be able to fit the treadmill in your home at all in the first place. Rest assured, all of these questions and more will be resolved in our in-depth buying guide. Allow us to help you by giving you all of the information you need to narrow down the top models to the ideal treadmill for your home.

Why Choose to Use a Treadmill?

Treadmills are often the preferred type of exercise equipment that people choose to have in their home. The reasons for this are endless, but some of the most common reasons are because it is a good form of cardio, workouts are highly customizable to fit the individual’s unique routing, workouts can be either short or long, and more. Treadmills are extremely convenient, because you can fit in a workout in nearly any timeframe, and it is also possible to multitask during a treadmill workout to make it feel like the time is going by faster. Some people choose to watch television or listen to music while on the treadmill, but some treadmills even come with unique entertainment features. Finally, some more advanced treadmills are able to use sophisticated technological features to track your progress to achieving your fitness goal, allowing you to see measurable results each time you complete a workout.

What to Look for in a Treadmill?

When it comes to choosing the right treadmill for your home, there is no single solution that will work for everyone. Everyone has different expectations from their treadmill, depending on their fitness goals, desired frequency of use, workout routine, and more. It is likely that you won’t find the perfect model for you until you compare a couple of the top choices. The primary aspects you will want to take into account when looking over your different options include your personal goals and expectations you hope to achieve from using your treadmill. How often do you plan on using your treadmill? How many customization features do you expect from your machine? Are you looking for something that can track your workouts?

If you are someone who is just looking to be able to do light workouts every now and then to stay active and in shape, but not looking to give your machine any intensive use, then you might be happier with a simpler model. However, if you plan on using your treadmill often and are dedicated to your workout routine, then you might want to invest more money in a more durable and advanced option.

Tips for Choosing the Best Treadmill

There are several factors you will want to consider when deciding which treadmill is ideal for your home. That’s why it’s a good idea to take all aspects of your future treadmill into account before purchasing it. Ideally, you want something that will be able to fulfil your expectations for years to come. To find the machine that can do that for you, here are some things we suggest keeping in mind while conducting your research of the top models:

  • Having a built-in heart rate monitor is an extremely useful way to track the intensity of your workout.
  • Pre-set and custom workouts come on some treadmills. The variation in activity helps keep boredom at bay during your workout.
  • If several people in your household will be using the treadmill, you might want to consider a treadmill that allows for separate user IDs. This allows each user to track their own progress separately and accurately.
  • If you aren’t planning on doing anything too advanced, you might find that too many buttons get confusing and intimidating. For casual users, simple is best.
  • Interval training is one of the fastest ways to get results. For those looking to see a difference quickly, look for treadmills with interval training programs downloaded on them.
  • Some treadmills offer fitness tests, which are a great way to see progress and motivate you to keep going with your routine. Check if the treadmill you are considering offers them.
  • Make sure your treadmill has the proper safety features, like handles, comfortable grips, and a safety key.
  • Such an expensive piece of equipment should come with a thorough warranty. Check what the model you’re considering comes with.

If you remember all of these factors while comparing the top rated home treadmill options, you are certain to find the best machine for you and your family. Every treadmill will have its own advantages and shortcomings. The most essential thing is that you should prioritize the components of your treadmill that are most essential to your workout routine and lifestyle needs, and ensure that you track down a model that meets with those requirements.

#1 Winner on all accounts and its portable too!

Product: LifeSpan TR1200i Folding Treadmill

Price: $899.99

Purchase Link

Intro

The LifeSpan TR1200i Folding Treadmill has been all around reliable, consistent, and surprisingly versatile through every test we’ve put it up against. The physical dimensions and build of the model don’t seem to cause potential limitations or annoyances. A very easy-to-use LCD console tracks time, calories, distance, speed and other stats we wanted to record. We were also able to record these numbers to create long-term records by simply inserting a USB stick. The motor doesn’t cause more than a quiet hum, but is proper blend of performance and longevity—sure to keep you running, walking, and jogging at your preferred pace for years to come. Plus, the EZfolding technology allows for transportation at an ease we’ve never experienced with comparably sized treadmills before.

Spec overview

  • 2.5 HP Continuous Duty DC
  • Supports up to 300 lbs.
  • EZFold folding system
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Patented Intelli-step step-counting technology

USP’s/ What Makes This Treadmill Unique

Perhaps the aspect of this treadmill we thought was most noticeable was the collection of patented technology utilized so expertly throughout the entire experience. The LifeSpan is home to a patented step-counting technology called Intelli-step. It’s accuracy and consistency left all of us impressed. Additionally, Intelli-Guard, another patented feature, ensures the user’s safety by automatically pausing the belt motion after 20 seconds of detected absence from the treadmill’s deck. The EZ folding technology, however, is the biggest standout. Simply lift the deck allowing the hydraulic shocks to do the rest of the work to create a smaller, more portable version of this device.

Our Experience Using It

This treadmill seems to deliver the exact experience advertised for it. Putting it together is rather simple, and using it in all of its variety doesn’t take more than a few minutes to figure out. The motor is exceptionally quiet, so your feet will be making more noise than anything as you embark upon your daily (hopefully) routines. The display is clear, easy to read, and accurate after regular usage from a number of individuals.

Conclusion

All in all, the LifeSpan TR1200i Folding Treadmill is a wonderfully versatile machine—and definitely the highest-end treadmill you can find without increasing your budget tenfold. The frame has a durable build which doesn’t feel questionable, even while supporting over 200 pounds. Its EZfolding technology allows for transportation that few other models can compete with. Winner of the Treadmill Doctor “Best Buy” award and Fitness Professor’s “Head of the Class” in 2011, this machine lives up to its hype consistently without forcing buyers to break the bank.

#2 Great allrounder Treadmill at a fair price

Product: Nautilus T614 Treadmill

Price: $799

Purchase Link

Intro

This treadmill is an all-around winner for most any jogger/walker. It has all the normal functions of a standard device, such as safety features, various speeds and inclines, and a specially designed  high-resolution blue backlit LCD monitor. Unlike with comparable models, where the screen is only there to display the most basic of possible data, this large, easy-to-read screen will most likely capture a user’s attention for a surprising amount of time. Though there are quick access speed and incline buttons for anyone who wants to hop on and quickly get in a brief workout, but the monitor acts as a gateway to a plethora of additional entertainment/record keeping features. Plus, for this price, comparable treadmills lack a large lot of the features the NatilusT614 offers.

 Spec overview

  • 3.0 CHP Motor.
  • Shipping weight: 207 pounds
  • SoftDrop folding system
  • 10 year frame and motor warranty.
  • Acoustic chambered speakers

USP’s/ What Makes This Treadmill Unique

Perhaps the most standout aspect on this machine is its variety of special features and a shockingly low price. One option we noticed that immediately surprised us was the ability to have more than one ‘profile’ (sets of data) kept on the machine. Although this isn’t a major, advertised feature, it is a delightful surprise which seems to be something this machine is full of. There are myriad of workouts programmed into the machine, as well connectivity to the MyFitnessPal website and a USB charging port for complete integration. Again, all of these features come packaged with a machine that, in the end, feels like a multi-thousand dollar machine.

Our Experience Using It

Although this treadmill is a bit heavy, we actually had close to no trouble assembling it once we were able to place it where we wanted it to go. Two people working together shouldn’t have any trouble getting it running within an hour. The base and frame of the treadmill feel surprisingly sturdy considering the price at which you can this pick this up. We also noticed just how quiet this machine is. Even at a walking pace, your steps will be the primary noisemakers when it’s in use.

Conclusion

All around, this treadmill doesn’t seem to disappoint in any particular area, and it comes at a very fair price. It runs at up to 12 mph with a 12% incline, which can then be decreased in increments of 10ths. Complete with a cushioning system, sealed speakers, and a contact and telemetry enabled heart rate reader; there aren’t many features this machine doesn’t seem to offer. Even though the make of this device feels sturdy and reliable, the warranty lasts up to ten years, which is sure to give you peace of mind in the surprising case that you should need your money back- even if you didn’t spend too much on it.

#3 The Budget winner of our hearts

Product: Weslo Cadence G 5.9 Treadmill

Price: $287

Purchase Link

Intro

The Weslo Cadence G 5.9 Treadmill is a lightweight and reliable device- one that you won’t find at a cheaper price. Running at less than $300, it’s surely the cheapest treadmill you’ll find in a decent market today. Thanks to the price, this treadmill doesn’t attempt to outdo others with special features or any entertainment options that may or may not go unused. It’s definitely a strip down model, but that allows for an easy-to-use, one-of-a-kind experience. It doesn’t take an expert or a previous runner to set this machine up or use it. There are only a handful of screws use to assemble it and two positions to choose from. This device surely is the winner of the Staying-under-budget award.

Spec overview

  • 119 pounds
  • Compact folding
  • 30 day warranty
  • Two position incline

USP’s/ What Makes This Treadmill Unique

Although it may sound tongue in cheek, the most remarkable feature that we noticed on this treadmill was its lack of special features. And, of course, the price that such a stripped down model provides. Not to say that it’s lacking in useful tools or settings- six workouts designed by a certified personal trainer ensure that it has the inspiration to get those hoping to initiate a new lifestyle a good place to start. There are also to rates of incline to choose from, and specially designed Comfort Cell Cushioning which will allow you to keep going longer than you have.

Our Experience Using It

Although taking it out of the box left us in some doubt (due to just how small and thin the device is) we were pleasantly surprised to see it hold up to some serious force! Its size might lead some to believe that it is made purely for walkers, but joggers are happily accommodated as well. The track isn’t too wide, but it was plenty wide to allow each of us ample room for our regular jogging pace.

Conclusion

Again, this treadmill isn’t supposed to blow a multi-thousand dollar treadmill out of the water, but there’s absolutely nothing in its price range that’s comparable. The display includes only information that we actually want to see, settings we need, and workouts we would consistently use. If you’re only now getting into running for the first time, or not sure how much you’ll enjoy getting your exercise done indoors, this might be the perfect risk for you to take. Price tag considered, it wouldn’t be much of a risk at all.

#4 Excellent machine but at a price

Product: SOLE F80

Price: $1,799.95 – $1,999.99

Purchase Link

Intro

For experienced runners, for healthy lifestyles, and for dedicated athletes, there exists a treadmill on the market called the SOLE F80. Though higher on the price spectrum than most, this heavy duty folding treadmill offers a type of variety when it comes to its actual purpose that no other model can properly compete with. The F80 even offers an exclusive, extensively studied Cushion Flex Whisper Deck, which has been proven to reduce impact on your joints by 40% according to some studies. There are six standard programs- in addition to its custom programs and heart programs. The LCD display is MP3 compatible and equipped with cooling fans helping the driving force to thrive in any environment.

Spec overview

  • 3.5 CHP DC Type motor
  • 253 pounds
  • Easy-assist folding
  • Residential 3 year warranty
  • MP3 Compatible sound system

USP’s/ What Makes This Treadmill Unique

The aspect of this treadmill that stands out above the rest is not just the craftsmen-ship; it’s the attention to detail. Sure, the model is well-built, sturdy, and definitely seems to take intense usage better than smaller models, but it comes complete with pretty much every detail that could enhance a user’s experience without wasting any room on frills. There are a multitude of programs to use until you find the one that works perfectly for you, or you decide to employ a variety. The speed can range from 0.5 to 12 mph, the rack-and-pinion gear designed incline from 0 to 15%, plus a convenient pulse grip and a chest strap heart rate monitoring system.

Our Experience Using It

The first thing we noticed when we began to use this treadmill was just how wide the belt and deck is compared to other models. Even when compared to other higher-end treadmills, the F80 seems to reign supreme. The length is impressive as well at 60”. The easy-assist folding mechanism works as expected and allows for it to quite gracefully take up considerably less space. The motor is powerful and the deck itself seemed to have no trouble supporting up to 220 pounds near its top speed.

Conclusion

If you’ve never use a treadmill before and you’re not quite sure it’s an exercise you’ll be able to stick to, you may be in the one group we’d advise to avoid this product. However, if you’re a consistent runner or determined to improve your lifestyle in the most effective manner possible, this may just be the treadmill for you. It makes excellent use of every feature and tool available, as will you after deciding to give this a model a run for its money.

Purchase Link

Intro

If you’re looking for a consistent treadmill that offers all of the amenities and a well-built frame, you may be looking for the NordicTrack C 990 Treadmill. Priced at just under $1,000, it offers the features of a much more expensive machine. Other than the wide/long belt that allows running styles of any kind, the designers seem to have prepared for any type of potential runner. The standard 0% to 12% incline is available at the touch of a button, a considerable variety of speeds, even an adjustable tablet holder which can move to keep your device at your preferred viewing angle and out of the way of the 7” touchscreen used to control the system.

Spec overview

  • 3.0 continuous HP Motor
  • SpaceSaver Design
  • Lifetime frame and motor warranty
  • iFit enabled

USP’s/ What Makes This Treadmill Unique

Perhaps the most standout aspect of this model is the integration it has achieved with the most common modern technologies. Of course it effectively holds a tablet at a an appropriate eye-level height and out of the way of the interactive touchscreen, but it also connects perfectly with the iFit program- a new and expansive fitness brand which maximises your routines with a countless number of training options. It allows you access to an entire library of training material, like HD videos and daily workouts. The console is web-enabled, which allows you to connect to google maps and run/jog/walk your way trhough any path in the world.

 Our Experience Using It

This machine was designed to be used to its fullest potential—that much is not debatable. Although we were able to set it up (as a group) without too much trouble, configuring the wifi enabled features did take some time. The wireless works pretty well, and we experienced no trouble getting it to function as described after a quick firmware update. The fan is consistent and cool, the motor is quiet and keeps running without any signs of problems. The only time we detected any sort of inconsistency in the speed of the conveyer was when we attempted to run it at its slowest speed, i.e. 2-3mph.

 Conclusion

All in all, the NordicTrack C990 treadmill is an impressive invention. It makes use of all the standard features that come with a high-quality treadmill in an excellent manner, and it takes a couple of new features you’ve probably never seen before along for the ride. If you’re ready for an upgrade, or want to begin your journey with something a little different, then this might be a treadmill that works for you. Capable of any use at even the highest of speeds, the NordicTrack is sure to be able to keep up with you, as long as you are able to keep up with it.

We found the treadmill to be okay, but with taking into consideration the amount at which it costs. For the low price tag, it really is a steal, but you do sacrifice features that other pricier units have. In using the treadmill, we found it to be a bit narrow on the tread while doing any cardio, so that takes some time to get used to. The display is fantastic and is easy to read and understand all of the metrics shown during your exercise sessions. It does its job well and is sturdy enough to withstand frequent use.

Conclusion

Overall, it is a decently built machine for daily use. It lacks some features that some more expensive treadmills have, but costs half to nearly a third of the cost of most of its competitors.

USP’s/ What Makes This Treadmill Unique

Easily adjustable motor speeds to go up or down in small increments with a wide surface area to walk on. Easy to store and move around with its front-mounted wheels.

Our Experience Using It

We found it adequate and provided a lot of speed variations, from a very slow to a fast paced walk. Using the walking treadmill was an ease and the belt was plenty wide. The only issue we found was when the kill switch release was pulled, the machine was relatively slow to get going again. The display is okay at showing the necessities for a good, basic walking exercise session with no added flair.

Conclusion

Overall, a nice machine for the low price. Compared to other regular treadmills, this lacks much, but this is solely aimed for those wanting to just walk. It provided the necessary metric readings with added support and safety.
